Introduction to the Design Process:

> What to Expect and What to Search For

There are a multitude of things to consider when tackling a new design, tweaking an existing identity, or crafting a powerful web presence. This process is different with each client---some of my customers need a little more inspiration than others and some projects warrant deeper research and more specific marketing strategies. Regardless of the approach or size of the project in question, there are three things that I always insist upon; time, patience and constant communication. Without these three elements at the forefront of the client/designer relationship, the integrity of the project is weakened. Therefore, I do my best to maintain a steady balance and strive to achieve a workflow that works best for all parties involved.

When approached with a new project, there is a very basic set of steps that I adhere to as a designer. First, I schedule an initial client meeting. It's very important for me to get to know you, listen to your ideas, get a feel for your personal style and preferred design aesthetic, and learn about your business and past projects. I like to keep these first meetings casual and fun!

From here I research, sketch, and research some more. Whether it's a website, logo, brochure, or any other printed material I usually schedule another meeting (or two) to share ideas, sketches, and color schemes. Following these meetings, I draw up 2-3 digital comps for my client to consider.

When a decision is made and the client has signed off on a design, I begin to fine-tune some of the details. These details range from layout to color choices to stock photography (or custom photography!), etc. During this process I remain in constant contact with the client, making sure that their needs are met in a timely and cost effective fashion.

Trusting your designer is crucial to this process. I offer my expertise as a seasoned visual artist and designer and am hopeful that we can learn to lean on each other; I can trust you to provide me with information pertinent to the project and you can trust me to create a suitable and successful design. When the project is completed, I issue my clients the final piece in various (high quality) file formats. I will always have a backup of these files and make myself available as best i can to revisit past projects.

Getting an Estimate

If you have a project in mind and would like to get an estimate, please feel free to contact me at tara@tarajohnsondesign.com or by phone--I will be happy to chat with you and can usually get an estimate out to you within 24 hrs. However, please keep in mind that this bid is merely an approximation; projects often change and there can be added demands that were originally unaccounted for. If there is a significant shift in the price or overall scope of a project, the client is always notified ahead of time. All of these details are explained in full when the client/designer contract is drawn up and signed.
